Initial EraEditInitial Era in D.O.P.E. Volume 1, Number 1 (May 1992). In the Initial Era, his real name is Dan Franklin. The story of his origin is essentially unchanged. He's in a van with the three others and they unknowingly travel into a nuclear testing zone, where the radiation changes them and gives them powers.
He and the other three friends form D.O.P.E. and become superheroes. They recruit many other members, and build a skyscraper headquarters building in Quadropolis. They then battle many a super villain, saving individuals, the city or just themselves.
Leper is injured severely when he and the other four main members of D.O.P.E. battle Sprinkles and Jack in "Sprinkles the Psychotic Moose" Volume 1, Numbers 12-14. He's shot in the head and through the chest with a shotgun by Jack. As reported in Issue 15, he was admitted to Quadropolis General Hospital. This showdown with Sprinkles illustrates that Leper has additional superpowers, including some intense healing powers.
Leper also appears, with Flaming Idiot, in "The Adventures of Sprinkles the Psychotic Moose" Number 8 in a giant battle at Sprinkles and Jack's cabin. They fight against Sprinkles, Jack, Mr. Fabulous, Burrito Man and Kenpo, along with McSpidey, That Bike Dude and Wolverspleen. Leper, along with everyone else, escapes the cabin before it explodes from a bomb planted by McSpidey.
