In the Initial Era, Mr. Fabulous first appears in "Mr. Fabulous" Number 1 (1992). Richard Gooner is struck by a meteorite that contains a superhero costume and an instruction manual. He wears the costume and becomes Mr. Fabulous.

In issue #2 he appears on the Late Show but leaves after being angered by the host. In his brief TV time he mentions he's looking for a sidekick. Back at his estate, there's a huge line of potential sidekicks, and he chooses Brown Noser for the job.

In "The Adventures of Sprinkles the Psychotic Moose" #7, Mr. Fabulous appears on video phone appealing to Sprinkles to come to the city. It appears Sprinkles and Mr. Fabulous know each other as they refer to each other by first names (Martin and Richard). In Issue #8, comes to help out Sprinkles in person at his cabin. He battles That Bike Dude only to fall victim to his Glowing Skull. He later recovers and reminds everyone of McSpidey's bomb in the cabin. Everyone escapes before the cabin explodes. After a run-in with Caribou which results in the apparent death of Jack, Mr. Fabulous heads to the city along with Sprinkles, Kenpo and Ex-Officer Smith. He doesn't do anything there but watch Sprinkles fight, and then after Jack takes care of the blob, he leaves.
